but sms has s, so right is "a sms"?

We know the basic rule for using a or an. Put a before singular nouns that start with a consonant sound and an before nouns that start with a vowel sound. For example: an apricot or a book
Consodering the above-mentioned points, we say an sms, since the sound of s is voiced /es/. It's also true for a word like a university, in which the u sounds as /ju/.
So, we need to pay attention to the sound.
