Hi. Today I hear this sentence: I have an sms.

but sms has s, so right is "a sms"?

Hi

We know the basic rule for using or an. Put before singular nouns that start with a consonant sound and an before nouns that start with a vowel sound. For example: an apricot or a book

Consodering the above-mentioned points, we say an sms, since the sound of is voiced /es/. It's also true for a word like university, in which the u sounds as /ju/.

So, we need to pay attention to the sound.
